The Partnership Selection

By Eddie Walls

I forgot Bet Bash was this week and was recently asked about partnerships during a interview recently.

I attended betbash 3 years ago and did a CFB panel, it was cool but I mismanaged the event in retrospect. I would do things much differently today than I did then.

Wondering around circa with no plan and talking with everyone I already knew was fantastic. I do it well and it's a comfort zone I tend to prefer.

The event had a lot of drinking and social events which I think a certain personality will thrive in and while I can pull it off, I'm also not going to produce partners in this environment. I don't drink much at all and rarely trust anyone while they are drinking.

I've had I would guess 30+ partners not including movers, runners, people I've backed in poker and sports. Just originators... A lot of beautiful mind in the past 15 years.

Bet bash is probably as good of a place as any to find a betting partner. Lets discuss what I look for in a originating partner and how to obtain someone you would benefit working with.

Here's the big thing you don't want to do and this is incredibly important, so we should start here. Do not oversell your results or ability.

There's nothing more bizarre when I'm hoping to work with someone to see if we can help each other when within a few conversations I'm suddenly dealing with the best of all time.

Give someone a modest look at what you can offer and if you exceed the expectation once working together then you can build off of that.

Don't be afraid to tell someone your strengths but also your weaknesses. I can crush totals and I'm about 45% on sides 4 hours before tip on non injury nba. How are you at sides?

Bankroll size matters. I have a healthy bankroll because I worked my ass off and stayed within a bet size that I feel comfortable with. I've had a few relationships fall apart where I was dealing with someone who was betting 10x sometimes 15x my bet size. We are not betting the same sport at that point. The difference in market and timing will distance you over time.

Bring something different to the table. You model? That's amazing. I am a mostly subjective based handicapper. If we can create numbers using both set of numbers...

Have you considered how your skills in one sports you currently specialize in would translate to another? I work mostly on CFB and NBA but my preseason work translates to anything really.

A overlooked quality of a good partnership is dedication. There is a lot of work that goes into a season for me. There's nothing worst than realizing I'm fairly alone and the other person(s) is half assing there end of the bargain. Make sure it's a equal setup or as close as it can be.

Can you explain to me your work? This is big for me. I'm a CLV believer and truther. If you can't beat the number I'm going to ask about it often. Explain to me what you are doing and how we arrived here. Sell me this bet if I have questions. We are investing in one another.

Personality has to be able to match on something. You'll be communicating a lot. I need to laugh, feel challenged but also talk about life when it happens. I don't need Richard Pryor and a therapist but I also need to feel heard occasionally and likewise I would hope.

2 years ago I worked with a hardcore MAGA guy and it got brought up our differences in opinions enough to know that it was intentional and we parted ways, no harm/foul.

Figure out as soon as possible how someone deals with losing. I just ask straight up nowadays. I am a poor loser but I try to not let it come across constantly. If someone is indifferent especially in a horrible downswing it will bother me a little but if someone is damn near suicidal any Monday a figure has to be paid, that's a hard pass for me as well.

Never put anyone down you're working with. Even if they can't win, actually especially if they can't win. Encourage the hell out of them. The best of the best are always telling you how smart you are, even when it can't be possible in the moment they are saying it.

Collect contact info by the bundles, bounce ideas off one another. Find out what motivates someone. Is it strictly profit based, is that what you are chasing as well? Find like-minded people.

Treat each other well, work with as many people as you can or for as much bandwidth as you can withstand. Keep the mind as open as the doorway to new ideas.

Have a incredible week and bash all your bets. Thanks for the space as always and good luck to all, Eddie
